Council Votes “No” on Ranked Choice Voting

RANK CHOICE VOTING WAS NOT APPROVED BY THE ALBUQUERQUE CITY COUNCIL MONDAY NIGHT. KOB TV REPORTS THE ISSUES THAT LED TO THE NEGATIVE VOTE WERE BAD TIMING … VOTER CONFUSION WITH THE NEW VOTING SYSTEM … AND THREE COUNCILORS RUNNING FOR RE-ELECTION.

THE PROPOSAL REJECTED BY THE COUNCIL MONDAY WOULD HAVE ALLOWED VOTERS TO RANK CANDIDATES IN THEIR ORDER OF PREFERENCE. THE NEW SYSTEM WOULD HAVE SAVED THE CITY MONEY SPENT ON RUNOFF ELECTIONS.

BUT IT MAY NOT BE THE END OF THIS ISSUE. THERE’S ALSO A PROPOSAL TO LET VOTERS DECIDE AT THE POLLS IF THEY WANT RANK CHOICE VOTING.
