Ranked -Choice Voting Proposed for Albuquerque

THREE ALBUQUERQUE CITY COUNCILORS ARE PROPOSING RANKED-CHOICE VOTING … LIKE SANTA FE HAS. AND THAT COULD HAPPEN AS SOON AS THIS YEAR. THE ALBUQUERQUE JOURNAL REPORTS THIS WOULD BASICALLY OVERHAUL THE CITY’S VOTING SYSTEM FOR COUNCILORS AND THE MAYOR.

THE THREE COUNCILORS SPONSORING THE PROPOSAL ARE ISAAC BENTON, PAT DAVIS AND AND BRAD WINTER. RANKED CHOICE VOTING LIKELY WILL NOT IMPACT DAVIS SINCE HE HAS ONLY ONE CHALLENGER THIS YEAR. IT COULD IMPACT BENTON’S ELECTION, THOUGH. AND WINTER IS NOT RUNNING FOR ANOTHER TERM.

COUNCIL DON HARRIS TELLS THE ABQ JOURNAL THE ISSUE SHOULD GO BEFORE VOTERS. HE ALSO SAYS HE QUESTIONS THE FAIRNESS OF SUCH A MAJOR ADJUSTMENT TO VOTING DURING AN ELECTION SEASON.
