Albuquerque Has an Amended Plastics Ban

ALBUQUERQUE’S PLASTICS BAN IS APPROVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL … BUT COUNCILORS APPROVED AN AMENDED VERSION OF THE PROPOSAL KNOWN AS THE CLEAN & GREEN RETAIL ORDINANCE. THE PART OF THE ORDINANCE THAT’S BEEN APPROVED IS THE PART THAT COVERS PLASTIC BAGS. THOSE WILL SOON DISAPPEAR FROM SUPERMARKETS AND OTHER STORES, SO YOU’LL HAVE TO REMEMBER YOU CLOTH BAGS NOW TO HOLD YOUR PURCHASES.

ONE OF THE REASONS FOR THE AMENDMENTS IS THE COST OF PLASTICS BAN WILL HAVE ON BUSINESS OWNERS. SO, THE PART OF THE PROPOSAL THAT WAS ELIMINATED WERE PLASTIC STRAWS AND STYROFOAM CARRYOUT CONTAINERS.

ABOUT 40 RESIDENTS SPOKE AT LAST (MON) NIGHT’S COUNCIL MEETING, BUT MOST WERE IN FAVOR OF THE BAN BY A 3-TO-1 MARGIN.
