Billion Dollar Spending Bill Passes in the House

THE STATE HOUSE LATE THURSDAY NIGHT APPROVED A 7-BILLION DOLLAR SPENDING BILL THAT PUTS SPENDING IN NEW MEXICO AT AN ALL TIME HIGH. NOW THE MEASURE GOES TO THE SENATE. MOST OF THE MONEY IN THE MEASURE WOULD GO TO PUBLIC SCHOOL TEACHERS AND PUBLIC SCHOOL PROGRAMS.

THE ABQ JOURNAL REPORTS HOUSE REPUBLICANS DID TRY TO CHANGE THE MEASURE, POINTING OUT THE SIZE OF SPENDING IT PROVIDES. THAT TURNED THE SESSION INTO A THREE HOUR DEBATE. THE SPENDING BILL WAS PASSED ANYWAY ON A 46-TO-23 VOTE.

THIS YEAR’S SPENDING BILL IS BIGGER THANKS TO AN OIL DRILLING BOOM IN THE STATE.
