Food Fight at the Round House

SEVERAL SENATORS ARE ENGAGED IN A FOOD FIGHT AT THE LEGISLATURE. THE SANTA FE NEW MEXICAN REPORTS SENATORS THAT INCLUDE SENATE FINANCE COMMITTEE CHAIRMAN JOHN ARTHUR SMITH HAVE FILED BILLS TO BRING BACK THE SALES TAX ON GROCERIES.

THE FOOD TAX WAS REPEALED IN 2004 AND ANY LEGISLATION FILED TO BRING BACK THE FOOD TAX HAS BEEN FIERCELY FOUGHT. SMITH TELLS THE ALBUQUERQUE JOURNAL HE KNOWS BRINGING THE TAX BACK IS NOT POPULAR BUT EXEMPTING IT HAS ALLOWED FOR FLAWS IN THE SYSTEM TO SURFACE AND BURDENED BOTH STATE AND LOCAL GOVERNMENTS.
