City to Take on Homeless Issues

THERE’S A MOVE ON AT ALBUQUERQUE CITY HALL TO KEEP THE WEST SIDE EMERGENCY HOMELESS SHELTER OPEN ALL YEAR LONG. IT’S CURRENTLY OPEN ONLY DURING THE WINTER MONTHS. LISA HUVAL WITH THE CITY’S FAMILY AND COMMUNITY SERVICES DEPARTMENT SAYS THERE ARE OTHER EMERGENCY SHELTERS IN ALBUQUERQUE, BUT THEY’RE ALWAYS OPERATING AT CAPACITY.

HUVAL SAYS THE KELLER ADMINISTRATION WOULD ALSO LIKE TO HAVE A HOMELESS FACILITY THAT’S MORE CENTRALLY LOCATED. THE WEST SIDE SHELTER IS 20 MILES WEST OF DOWNTOWN…AND TAKES 30 TO 40 MINUTES TO GET THERE.
