NM Federal Workers Apply for Food Assistance

AN OFFICIAL WITH ALBUQUERQUE’S ROADRUNNER FOOD BANK SAYS THEY’RE ALREADY HEARING FROM FURLOUGHED FEDERAL WORKERS REQUESTING FOOD ASSISTANCE AS THE PARTIAL GOVERNMENT SHUTDOWN CONTINUES. COMMUNICATIONS OFFICER SONYA WARWICK SAYS THERE ARE CONCERNS ABOUT SNAP BENEFITS IF THE IMPASSE IN WASHINGTON CONTINUES. SHE SAYS SNAP WILL BE FUNDED THROUGH THE END OF FEBRUARY. BEYOND THAT, SHE SAYS THEY’LL HAVE TO WAIT AND SEE WHAT HAPPENS.

WARWICK SAYS THE SHUTDOWN COMES AT A CRITICAL TIME, SINCE FOOD DONATIONS AT THE FIRST OF THE YEAR HAVE BEEN BELOW EXPECTATIONS. SHE’S HOPING THE TWO SIDES CAN COME TOGETHER AND END THE SHUTDOWN AS SOON AS POSSIBLE.
