Virtual Kidnapping Scam Hits NM

WE’RE BEING WARNED BY THE FBI IN NEW MEXICO TO BE WARY OF A PHONE SCAM CALLED VIRTUAL KIDNAPPING. NO ONE IS ACTUALLY KIDNAPPED IN THESE INSTANCES, BUT SPECIAL FBI AGENT FRANK FISHER SAYS THE SCAMMERS COERCE VICTIMS INTO PAYING A HEFTY AND QUICK RANSOM BY WIRE BEFORE THE SCAM FALLS APART.

FISHER SAYS THE FBI’S ALBUQUERQUE DIVISION HAS HELPED WITH SEVERAL RECENT CASES. WORD IS THE NEW MEXICO CASES INVOLVED SCAMMERS TRYING TO KEEP A VICTIM ON THE PHONE TO ENSURE THEY CANNOT VERIFY WHERE THEIR RELATIVE IS AND CANNOT CONTACT POLICE. THE BEST THING TO DO IF YOU RECEIVE SUCH A CALL IS TO NOT SHARE ANY INFORMATION WITH THE CALLER, HANG UP AND LET POLICE KNOW A SCAMMER CONTACTED YOU.
