NM Monsoons a Threat to Soldier Canyon Fire Area

THE MONSOONS ARE EXPECTED TO KICK IN THIS WEEK … EARLIER THAN USUAL. AND THE APPROACHING WEATHER SYSTEM COULD HAVE A MAJOR IMPACT ON THE SOLDIER CANYON FIRE ON THE MESACLERO APACHE RESERVATION. THE WEATHER SYSTEM IS CURRENTLY MOVING NORTHWARD ALONG THE WEST COAST OF MEXICO AND THE STORM TRACK COULD TAKE OVER THE FIRE AREA, DRENCHING IT WITH CONSIDERABLE RAINFALL.

THAT HEAVY RAIN COULD ALSO CAUSE FLASH FLOODS AND MUDSLIDES, ESPECIALLY AFTER THE GROUND AND VEGETATION HAVE BEEN DAMAGED BY THE FIRE. A FLOOD RESPONSE GROUP IS NOW FORMED BY THE MESCALERO TRIBE TO ASSESS FLOOD HAZARD AREAS. THOSE WHO LIVE ON THE WEST SIDE OF HIGHWAY 70 SHOULD START PREPARING FOR POSSIBLE FLOODING.
